Spixi Snails
Spixi snails are similar to mystery snails in shape and size but have a decorative brown stripe running with the shell spiral. For this reason they are sometimes also called zebra apple snails. The under color is a dark sunflower yellow. They have a door on the bottom of their shell than can be opened and shut to shelter the snail inside. Their body has occasional dark spots on a lighter colored background.
The asolene spixi is a freshwater species suitable for community aquariums. The Spixi will not harm fish but does eat eggs if they come across them. Coming from South America they prefer a tropical temperature and will hibernate if the water becomes too cold.
Interesting Behaviors
When observing the spixi travelling up the wall of a fish tank you will notice they move differently from most aquatic snails. Like an inchworm they stretch their body forward which is quickly followed by the tail. They have a breathing tube which they will sometimes extend like a snorkel for breathing fresh air.
