Cerith Snails
The shell of the cerith snail is a cone shaped spiral studded with tiny spikes. They are found throughout the ocean reefs of the world with huge variation in the color of pattern amongst the different species. In marine aquariums they are very popular because their feeding habits make them an easy creature to care for
Captive Behaviors
Generally these animals will move over the entire aquarium looking for tidbits to devour. Occasionally you may find that your cerith snails have all gone missing. They will sometimes have burrowed beneath the sand where they cannot be found. This behavior occurs in the wild when a storm is raging as a way to avoid being washed away. Other times you can look for your ceriths next to rock rubble scavenging for food.
Why People Choose Cerith Snails
Members of this family can be some of the hardiest snails for a marine environment. In the wild they eat algae, diatoms and bits of garbage that have fallen to the sand. These feeding behaviors make them a valuable cleaning animal in the home fish tank. Some species will sift algae from the sand in areas where it is growing next to the glass.
