Angelfish Cichlids
Pterophylum Scalare
Many may not be aware that the angelfish is a cichlid. This graceful fish has long ornate fins and a very tall slender body. While similar in its requirements to the discus an angelfish is much easier to care for and a lot less expensive.
Angelfish Varieties
There are a range of colors available amongst angelfish. Koi angels are named such because they have orange white and black markings. Gold, silver and platinum colored angelfish are quite metallic in nature. Marbled varieties have irregular blotches of black ans silver marked on their body and fins. Black angelfish are a dark variety seen for sale occasionally.
Keeping Angelfish
Provide angelfish with slightly acidic water kept at a tropical temperature. Avoid using hard water. Feed angelfish with a protein rich diet. Frozen and dry cichlid food should both be provided. Tall growing plants are appreciated as their bodies are perfectly designed for swilling through such vegetation.
Breeding Angelfish
Reproduction is considered fairly easy in angelfish. They will spawn on a large plant leaf or other flat surface. Many breeders often use slate for the purpose. As angels are prone to eating their own fry it is usually best to remove the eggs from the parents before hatching.
