African Cichlids
When people talk about African cichlids they are often referring to one of the fish coming from Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganikya or Lake Malawai. These fish are generally striking in their color and behavior but very sensitive to water conditions. This is due to the very stable water chemistry in the lakes that they were originally collected from.
African Cichlid Varieties
Many African cichlids live in colonies of many fish. The noble Frontosa cichlid is one such species. Although they can be brutal to other fish a colony of Frontosa is a closely linked family unit. This is typical behavior for African cichlids which is why they are often kept in a single species aquarium.
Why People Choose African Cichlids
It is the striking colors that usually draw people to African cichlids. Once owned the breeding procedures and behaviors are often closely watched by their owners. Many African cichlids are mouth brooders which means the eggs are hatched and fry raised inside the mother's mouth. Witnesses will observe the tiny school of fry darting for safety in their mother's mouth when disturbed.
